WASHINGTON — Tesla is recalling 173 Cybertruck vehicles from model years 2024 to 2026 due to a defect that could cause a wheel component to crack and increase the risk of a crash, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The agency said cracking in the rotor may cause a wheel stud to separate from the wheel hub in vehicles equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. It said rough road conditions and cornering forces may strain the stud hole in the rotor, leading to cracks that could worsen over time and result in wheel stud separation.

NHTSA said wheel stud separation could reduce vehicle controllability and increase the risk of a collision.

Tesla said it will replace the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts with updated components at no cost to owners. The recall is identified by Tesla as SB-26-33-003, and owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.

Separately, Tesla is recalling more than 200,000 vehicles, including Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Model 3 units, due to a software issue affecting rearview camera operation.

NHTSA said the software issue may cause the rearview camera to temporarily stop functioning, reducing driver visibility and increasing crash risk. Tesla identified that recall as SB-26-00-016.

The company said it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to either issue.
