INDIAN WELLS, California — Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka booked a fourth-round showdown at the Indian Wells Open on Sunday, while the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala advanced after Coco Gauff retired due to injury.

World No. 1 Sabalenka powered past Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, 6-4, 6-1, to set up a last-16 clash with former champion Osaka.

Osaka, seeded 16th, defeated Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, avenging her first-round loss to the Colombian at the tournament last year.

Meanwhile, Eala moved into the fourth round after Gauff, the world No. 4, retired with a left arm injury while trailing 6-2, 2-0.

Gauff described the pain as intense and sudden.
“It felt like a firework going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire,” she said.

The American took a medical timeout late in the first set as a trainer worked on her left arm and shoulder. Although her forearm was wrapped afterward, the discomfort persisted. After 54 minutes, Gauff approached the net and informed Eala she could not continue.

“I really didn’t want to win this way,” Eala said, thanking the large contingent of Filipino fans in attendance. “But this is still a really big moment for me to be able to play on Stadium One of Indian Wells and against such a great competitor.” She also wished Gauff a speedy recovery.

Earlier, Sabalenka delivered a dominant performance that included 23 winners against Cristian.
“So many things I felt like I did great today,” Sabalenka said. “Serving well, staying focused, and of course happy with the win.”

Sabalenka is chasing her first title at Indian Wells, having previously finished runner-up twice.

Osaka, playing her first tournament since withdrawing before her third-round match at the Australian Open due to an abdominal injury, rebounded strongly in the deciding set against Osorio.

“I tried to be more positive,” Osaka said, noting she had been frustrated by mistakes earlier in the match. “I thought my daughter could be watching me mope around the court, so I needed to pick up my attitude.”

Also advancing to the fourth round were American Amanda Anisimova and Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. Anisimova routed Britain’s Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-1, while Paolini defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.
