Commissioner Mike Morath of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) provided an update on the accountability ratings for the Houston Independent School District (HISD).
The TEA shared the 2025 A-F Accountability Ratings for public school systems and campuses in Texas on Friday morning.
HISD announced earlier this week that they have no schools with an F rating. Commissioner Morath expressed the significance of the ratings, emphasizing the importance of transparency and providing clear information to families regarding school performance.
Commissioner Morath and HISD Superintendent Mike Miles spoke at Jefferson Elementary School on Friday. Superintendent Miles detailed the transformation of Jefferson Elementary from a D-rated to an A-rated school within a year. He highlighted the overall progress of HISD campuses, stating that for the first time in recent history, no HISD students are attending F-rated schools.
Superintendent Miles mentioned that two years ago, approximately 40,000 students were in F-rated schools. Currently, 74% of HISD schools have an A or B rating. He noted that around 70,000 students are now attending B-rated schools, reflecting a significant improvement.
The district aims to assist students who are still lagging behind, regardless of their location, and to address educational disparities. Superintendent Miles stated that the goal is to have all schools in Houston achieve an A or B rating within three years.
Commissioner Morath highlighted the benefits of the A-F system for enhancing student education and resolving academic performance issues. He explained that the system is intended to set goals and achieve high academic standards.
Approximately 1,208 districts and 9,084 campuses underwent evaluation for the 2025 ratings. Compared to the previous year, 24% of districts and 31% of campuses improved their letter grades. Most campuses maintained their previous ratings, with a small percentage experiencing a decline.
The TEA ratings aim to assess how effectively schools prepare students for the next grade level and post-graduation success.
