Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce announced their engagement on August 26 through Instagram, instantly shattering platform records with millions of reposts, likes, and a surge in followers for both the pop icon and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.
Photos in the post showed Kelce proposing on one knee and Swift wearing a diamond ring. Swift captioned the post: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
According to Meta, Instagram’s parent company, the post surpassed one million reposts within six hours, the fastest in the app’s history. As of press time, it has nearly 10 million reposts and 31 million likes.
The announcement also led to a surge in followers for both celebrities. Marketing agency SEO Sherpa reported that Swift gained 1.2 million new followers within 24 hours, while Kelce gained 770,000. The increase marked the largest one-day follower growth for any National Football League player, though Kelce remains second in overall followers behind Odell Beckham Jr.
Spotify reported that Swift’s track “So High School” from her album The Tortured Poets Department saw a 400 percent jump in streams after the announcement. Swift also reposted the engagement news on her Instagram story using the same track.
Swift is scheduled to release her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3. Kelce will open the NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 5.
The pair went public in October 2023 after months of speculation, have now sealed their relationship with one of the most viral celebrity announcements ever.
