TAIPEI —Taiwan’s defense ministry on Friday accused China of escalating regional tensions by conducting a military patrol near the island involving 21 Chinese warplanes, including J-16 fighters, and several warships.
The operation, described by Taiwan as a “so-called joint combat” exercise, took place in the mid-afternoon.
China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has frequently carried out military drills and patrols near the island. Since President Lai Ching-te took office last year, China has conducted three major rounds of war games close to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s government views these activities as intimidation tactics aimed at pressuring the island, while also maintaining a strong stance on self-defense and sovereignty. China has not ruled out using force to unify Taiwan with the mainland.
Taiwan’s defense ministry urged China to cease military provocations and pursue peaceful dialogue. Meanwhile, other countries remain watchful of the developments, concerned about the potential for conflict in the region.
