Police and SWAT teams surrounded a home in Stafford, Texas, on Wednesday night after a man allegedly killed one person and fired at officers, striking an officer’s vest but causing no harm.

The incident began around 10 p.m. when the suspect’s father reported to the Stafford Police Department that his son had committed a murder. Officers arrived at a residence on the 13000 block of Lawrence Lane, where they found a body in the backyard, wrapped in a blanket and covered partly by plywood.

Police identified the suspect as 35-year-old Adrian Mercado. The relationship between Mercado and the victim remains unknown. As officers attempted to make contact at the front door, Mercado allegedly opened fire. One officer was struck by a bullet, but it hit his radio on the front of his vest, leaving him unharmed.

Officers established a perimeter around the property. The suspect continued firing for about an hour and a half before the situation escalated. Inside the home, investigators discovered a second deceased man whose identity and connection to Mercado have yet to be confirmed.

SWAT teams from Stafford, Missouri City, and Sugar Land responded to the scene to assist in resolving the standoff. They employed K9 units, drones, and flashbangs to manage the situation. The police evacuated nearby streets as a safety measure but stated that there was no immediate threat to the public.

Additionally, investigators revealed that Mercado has an active warrant for aggravated robbery. This warrant led to heightened concerns about the potential for violence during the standoff.

Authorities have not confirmed Mercado’s status, whether he is alive, deceased, or has fled the premises. The absence of direct communication with him has complicated the efforts to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.

Local residents expressed unease as they followed the developing situation. Many stayed indoors, heeding police advice for their safety. The police presence included marked patrol cars and tactical units, drawing attention from the local community.

The Stafford Police Department has not released further details regarding the identity of the deceased individuals or any possible motives for the alleged killings. The ongoing investigation seeks to determine the full circumstances leading up to the tragic events.
