JOINT BASE ANDREWS, United States — U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States will ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open and identified preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon as the primary objective in ongoing peace talks.
Trump made the remarks to reporters before departing Washington, stating that the United States would act to keep the strategic waterway open regardless of Iran’s cooperation.
The administration has sent Vice President JD Vance to Pakistan to meet with Iranian officials as part of efforts to negotiate a peace agreement following a two-week ceasefire reached earlier this week.
Trump said the talks in Islamabad will address security and access to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route that carries about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil supply.
When asked to define the terms of a successful agreement, Trump said the United States seeks to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon.
Officials have not released further details about the scope or timeline of the negotiations.
