HOUSTON, Texas– The state-appointed board of managers for Houston ISD approved a five-year contract extension for Superintendent Mike Miles on Thursday.

The board voted on the extension during a scheduled meeting without holding prior public discussion on the renewal.

Superintendent Miles recently reported gains in STAAR exam performance, which the Texas Education Agency (TEA) cited as part of the district’s progress. TEA Commissioner Mike Morath commended the improvements made under state oversight.

Houston ISD will remain under TEA-appointed management for at least two more years. The board’s initial takeover, which began in 2023, drew criticism from several Democratic lawmakers and community members.

The approved contract outlines evaluation criteria and includes compensation terms aligned with other superintendent agreements across Texas.
