The South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, is set to reopen following a new agreement between CoreCivic, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and local officials.
The facility, which has been central to U.S. immigration enforcement since its opening in December 2014, is the largest immigrant housing center in the country, with a capacity to house up to 2,400 people, primarily migrant families from Central America.
CoreCivic, a private prison corporation based in Nashville, Tennessee, will manage the center under the new agreement.
Family detention practices were suspended during former President Joe Biden’s administration in 2021, with the Dilley facility and others being repurposed.
However, the Trump administration revived such facilities in efforts to address immigration and deportation issues.
