Mahad Maxamud interacts with followers as he goes live on social media in Mogadishu on December 6, 2025. A Somali migrant deported from the United States and labelled an "illegal scumbag" by the White House for aiding the kidnapping of two French spies in Mogadishu, may have been wrongly accused. Mahad Maxamud returned to a hero's welcome in Somalia last month, not least because he is a hugely popular social media star whose online rants have earned him more than 450,000 TikTok followers. MOGADISHU, Somalia — A Somali man deported from the United States in 2024 over allegations related to the kidnapping of two French intelligence operatives returned to Mogadishu last month, where supporters and residents greeted him.

US authorities identified the man as Mahad Maxamud and linked him to the 2024 kidnapping case in Somalia’s capital. Maxamud was removed from the US under immigration procedures last year.

Upon arrival in Mogadishu on a commercial flight, crowds gathered at the airport. Some supporters questioned the US allegations, while Somali authorities said Maxamud was not placed under arrest or formal detention after returning and did not announce any new investigation.

Family members told local media they plan to seek clarification from Somali and US authorities regarding the reasons for his deportation.

Somali security officials said they continue to monitor individuals connected to past kidnappings or militant activity, but confirmed that no new charges had been filed against Maxamud. Diplomatic sources said French and US authorities continue coordination with Somali officials on broader security matters, including historical cases involving French intelligence personnel.
