MANILA, Philippines — Alan Peter Cayetano formally wrote to senators informing them that the upper chamber will convene as an impeachment court on Monday, May 18, at 3 p.m. to hear the complaints against Sara Duterte.
In a letter dated May 15 addressed to “The Honorable Members of the Senate,” Cayetano said the Senate received the House of Representatives’ resolution containing the Articles of Impeachment and its annexes on May 13.
“In view of the foregoing, the Senate shall convene as an Impeachment Court on Monday, 18 May 2026, at 3:00 PM, in accordance with the applicable rules and procedure,” the Senate president said.
“Pursuant to Rule I of the Senate Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials and consistent with its mandate under Article XI, Section 3 of the Constitution, the Senate has taken proper order of the impeachment and shall immediately proceed to its consideration,” the letter reads.
The Senate leader added that the chamber had already communicated its action to the House through a letter sent to the speaker on May 14, which was likewise received on the same day.
Senators were also requested to be present at the Session Hall and were reminded to wear their robes as senator-judges, in accordance with the Senate Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials.
