MANILA, Philippines– The Supreme Court has issued writs of amparo and habeas data in the case of activist Felix Salaveria Jr., who has been missing since August 2023.

The court’s resolution, dated December 13, 2024, orders the Court of Appeals to investigate the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

The writ of amparo is a legal remedy designed to protect individuals whose rights to life, liberty, and security are threatened, providing both preventive and curative relief.

The writ of habeas data, meanwhile, compels the release of information related to a person, focusing on protecting privacy against unlawful interference.

Salaveria was known for his involvement in human rights advocacy, and his disappearance has raised concerns among rights groups and civil society organizations.

These groups have called for urgent action from authorities to locate him and ensure his safety.

The case has intensified discussions on enforced disappearances in the Philippines, a critical issue for human rights organizations, who continue to demand greater government accountability.

The Court of Appeals will be tasked with gathering evidence, testimonies, and any documentation related to Salaveria’s case to determine the circumstances of his disappearance.

The Supreme Court’s issuance of the writs signals a commitment to ensuring judicial protection for individuals at risk.

Human rights advocates have welcomed the decision, seeing it as a necessary step in promoting accountability and deterring future abuses.
