The San Antonio Zoo announced Tuesday that its new gorilla habitat, Congo Falls, will open to the public in 2025. Zoo officials described the project as a major milestone in the institution’s 111-year history.

Congo Falls will house a troop of gorillas in a purpose-built environment designed to support animal welfare, conservation work, and education.

The San Antonio Zoo, founded in 1914, operates as a nonprofit focused on animal care, conservation, and public education. Officials did not specify how many gorillas will be brought to the new habitat but said the space will follow modern standards for great ape management.

Construction began after a planning process involving animal care staff, architects, and experts in great ape habitats. Congo Falls will feature indoor and outdoor areas with climbing structures, vegetation, and water features to encourage natural behavior.

Guests will have multiple viewing areas set at distances that ensure safety and animal welfare. The exhibit will also include educational displays about gorilla biology, behavior, and the conservation challenges facing wild populations.

The zoo said it plans to partner with conservation groups to support field projects for gorillas in central Africa. Congo Falls is part of a long-term development plan that includes new exhibits and facility upgrades across the 56-acre zoo.

The project is one of the zoo’s largest recent capital investments and follows improvements to habitats for big cats, birds, amphibians, and other species.

The habitat will follow guidelines from zoological associations on enrichment, social grouping, nutrition, and veterinary care.
