SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Commissioners Court this week proclaimed April 30 as National Therapy Animal Day to recognize volunteers and therapy animals providing services in the community.
The proclamation highlighted the work of the SA Royals Therapy Team, which offers free therapy services at schools and the Cadena-Reeves Justice Center through certifications with Pet Partners. The group said it plans to expand services to county offices, living centers, special needs facilities and hospitals.
Volunteers Cynthia-Happy Buttles and Linda Kaiser attended the proclamation ceremony at the county courthouse.
Ron Rangel said therapy dogs assist courtroom participants, including witnesses and jurors, particularly when they view video evidence. He cited a case involving a teenager’s death captured on a police dashboard camera and said therapy dogs helped reduce stress for those present.
Stephanie Boyd said therapy dogs support young witnesses in felony courts and help them during proceedings.
The proclamation cited research indicating therapy animals can reduce stress, relieve depression, slow heart rates, lower blood pressure and support immune function.
