SAN ANTONIO — Animal control officers in San Antonio are searching for a gray cat seen earlier this week with a jar stuck on its head near East Houston and North Grimes streets, according to the San Antonio Animal Care Services.
The agency said the cat was last spotted darting under a shed behind a home in the area. A resident took a photo of the animal, showing what appears to be a glass or plastic jar covering its head. The image circulated on social media before it was reported to the city agency.
Lisa Norwood, public relations and outreach manager for Animal Care Services, said officers reviewed the photo and confirmed the situation appears to be real.
Animal control officers have conducted spot checks in the area and placed a humane trap on private property with the owner’s permission in an effort to catch the animal. Officials said the property owner agreed to monitor the trap and notify the agency if the cat is captured.
Norwood said officers typically place food in traps to attract animals. However, she said it is unclear whether the cat will detect the food because the jar may block its sense of smell.
Kenneth Bornes, who said he spends time near the area where the cat was last seen, said he learned about the animal after someone showed him the photo.
Animal Care Services said it is possible the cat may have already freed itself from the container. Officials asked residents to report sightings rather than approach the animal.
The agency advised anyone who sees the cat to take a photo, note the location and contact Animal Care Services or call 311.
