San Antonio Police Chief William McManus announced in Austin, Texas, that he will retire later this year, ending nearly two decades as head of the San Antonio Police Department.

McManus holds the distinction of being the longest-tenured police chief in the city’s history.

McManus has led the department since 2006, overseeing law enforcement operations for one of the largest police agencies in Texas.

During his time as chief, McManus managed department-wide initiatives that included policy reforms, officer training programs, and responses to major public safety incidents. He also oversaw the expansion of technology and accountability measures within the department and guided the agency through periods of heightened public scrutiny of law enforcement nationwide.

Before his appointment in San Antonio, McManus served as police chief in Minneapolis and Dayton, Ohio. He began his law enforcement career in Washington, D.C., and accumulated decades of experience in municipal policing before arriving in Texas.

City officials said McManus will remain in his role through the coming months to ensure continuity of operations. Officials have not announced an exact retirement date or outlined the process for selecting his successor.

San Antonio city leadership is expected to begin discussions on leadership transition and future public safety priorities as McManus prepares to step down.
