SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The City of San Antonio is considering a new aquatic center on the city’s South Side, with a potential opening in 2027 pending approval.

Voters approved funding for the facility through the 2022 bond package, allocating about $5 million for the project. Plans for the proposed “Mission Aquatics Center” include a pool, splash pad, bathhouse, parking lot, and a possible lazy river on roughly 3.7 acres at 3110 Roosevelt Avenue in Council District 3.

The site is currently vacant and is located across from Mission Marquee Plaza and the World Heritage Center, adjacent to the Harvey Najim YMCA and VFW Post. Construction documents from design contractor Rialto Studio indicate the land was part of Mission San Jose but has no remaining significant mission-period resources due to post-war development.

The pool design features a zero-entry child lagoon, accessible entry, sunbathing platforms, lifeguard stations, a rinse shower, drinking fountains, picnic areas, and safety fencing with controlled entry. The facility’s design is inspired by the Mission San Jose Rose Window, an iconic city symbol. The main pool is planned to be 3,020 square feet with a depth of five feet.

The project requires a final review from the city’s Historic Design and Review Commission, scheduled for January 21. If approved, the Mission Aquatics Center would join San Antonio’s network of 25 city-owned pools managed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
