San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones on Thursday proposed shifting the city’s municipal elections from May to November, a change intended to increase voter participation and reduce election-related expenses.

The proposal would place future mayoral, City Council, and city ballot measure elections on the same date as state and federal general elections. According to Mayor Jones, city staff estimate that consolidating the election schedule would save roughly $1 million each cycle through reduced spending on separate administration, polling locations, and staffing.

Mayor Jones explained that turnout in May municipal elections consistently falls short of participation levels seen in November.

The administration plans to release detailed turnout comparisons and cost figures ahead of council deliberations. City officials also intend to consult with election law experts to confirm the legal steps required for implementation. Depending on the findings, the City Council could determine whether a charter amendment must appear on a future ballot.

Mayor Jones stated that the proposal responds to concerns from residents and civic groups who have raised issues about low participation in stand-alone municipal elections.

The item will appear on a future City Council agenda for discussion and possible action. Council members will be able to question staff on turnout data, projected savings, and logistical requirements before voting. The city plans to publish council meeting dates and agendas related to the proposal on its official website.

Residents may submit comments through established public input channels as the proposal moves through the council process.
