The San Antonio City Council announced Monday a new program providing free VIA Metropolitan Transit bus rides to middle and high school students in the city and surrounding areas.

City officials said students can ride VIA buses at no cost during the school year using student identification to verify eligibility. The program applies to trips to and from school, with officials outlining potential extensions to after-school activities, libraries, and community centers.

Officials developed the program in coordination with VIA Metropolitan Transit and consulted with local school districts and community groups to ensure participation and safety guidelines. The announcement included details on how students and families can access free fares, types of identification required, and information in multiple languages.

The council member leading the initiative said the city will track participation and measure the program’s impact on student attendance. Funding will come from city resources, grants, partnerships, or a combination of sources.

VIA representatives will provide instructions for bus operators to recognize eligible students and outlined outreach through schools, online platforms, and transit centers. Officials plan to monitor the program during its first year to determine potential modifications or expansion in future school years.
