MANILA, Philippines– The Philippine Coast Guard retrieved several sacks filled with heavy materials during dive operations last week in Taal Lake, prompting speculation about a possible link to missing sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts).

However, residents of Laurel, Batangas, where the sacks were recovered, say the items are commonly used as anchors for fish cages in local aquaculture operations.

“These sacks are filled with sand or gravel to keep tilapia cages in place,” said Cristy Mendoza, a resident of the lakeside community. “Every cage has them. If something had been dumped, it wouldn’t be where the cages are.”

The Coast Guard has not confirmed whether the sacks contain human remains. Authorities continue to investigate, but speculation has caused concern among fish cage operators worried about the impact on their livelihood.

Mendoza urged the public not to jump to conclusions, noting that such rumors could unfairly damage the local aquaculture industry. “Tilapia eat fish feed, not humans,” she said.

The Taal Lake community has asked for balanced reporting and factual clarity as the investigation continues. Residents emphasized the lake’s importance as a primary source of income and sustenance.

Search operations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the contents and origin of the recovered sacks.
