SEOUL, South Korea– Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea’s main liberal opposition Democratic Party, announced his resignation on Wednesday amid speculation about his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
South Korea’s Labor Minister, Kim Moon-soon, also declared his candidacy for the presidency.
South Korea will conduct a presidential election on June 3, following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, whose removal was confirmed on April 4.
The resignation of Lee Jae-myung and the announcement of Kim Moon-soon’s candidacy come as the nation prepares for a political transition.
