ODESA, Ukraine — Ukrainian emergency authorities reported that a Russian missile strike hit port infrastructure in Odesa on Saturday, killing eight people and wounding 27.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said rescue teams recovered the bodies and transported the injured to local hospitals, with several admitted to intensive care units.
Officials said the attack damaged facilities crucial to Black Sea trade and logistics. Firefighters contained fires at the site and prevented further damage. Windows, equipment, and port infrastructure suffered widespread destruction, and debris scattered across the area.
Ukraine’s military reported that air defense systems attempted to intercept the incoming missiles. Authorities tracked multiple launches from Russian-controlled territory and the Black Sea before the strike. Air raid sirens sounded across Odesa, and residents were urged to move to shelters.
Regional authorities opened criminal proceedings under Ukrainian law for violations of the laws and customs of war and intentional killings. Emergency teams continued search and rescue operations to locate any people trapped under rubble.
The attack occurred as a Russian envoy prepared to travel to Florida for talks on a U.S.-proposed plan to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine.
