Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced she plans to resign from Congress early next year. She posted the statement Friday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Her announcement comes after a period of disagreement with President Donald Trump and other members of her party.

Greene represents Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. She first won election to the U.S. House in 2020 and took office in January 2021. She has aligned herself closely with Trump. Her resignation will change internal dynamics among House Republicans.

Her post stated she will leave before the end of her term. She did not provide an exact date or detail steps for submitting her resignation. Official confirmation from the House clerk or party leadership has not been issued.

Her decision follows disagreements involving Trump and other Republican colleagues. Reports indicate a growing separation between Greene and the former president.

Greene has often supported Trump on policy, election claims, and public messaging. She has also used social media to criticize Republicans she views as disloyal to Trump.

Her announcement raises questions about representation in her district. The governor of Georgia would call a special election to fill the vacancy, depending on the formal date of her resignation and state law. No timeline for a special election has been set.

House Republican leaders must adjust committee assignments and vote counts after her resignation. The GOP holds a narrow majority, and a vacant seat could affect legislative negotiations. House leadership has not issued a public response.

Greene has faced criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans since taking office. She has maintained an active presence on social media for announcements and responses.

Her post on X reached followers, journalists, and observers, sparking reactions online from supporters and critics. Official records will only mark her seat vacant once she submits a formal resignation and House officials process it. Until then, she retains full voting rights and responsibilities.

Future plans for Greene are unknown. She has not announced a new campaign or public office bid. Statements from her office or party leaders may provide more information in the coming days.

Her resignation will create a midterm vacancy in a Republican district and remove a visible House member. Observers are assessing the effects on party unity, Trump’s influence, and upcoming legislative activity.
