MANILA, Philippines– Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Wednesday opposed former President Rodrigo Duterte’s interim release request from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands.

He argued that the request was neither appropriate, practical, nor necessary.

Remulla stated that Duterte currently receives the best care in the Netherlands, indicating that conditions do not warrant an interim release.

He stressed the importance of following due process while ensuring Duterte’s rights are protected.

The ICC had launched an investigation into Duterte’s controversial anti-drug campaign, which reportedly led to numerous extrajudicial killings.

The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in March 2019, but the court retains jurisdiction over cases related to the country’s prior membership.

The Philippine government, while cooperative with international bodies, maintains its sovereignty over domestic legal matters.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has yet to issue a statement regarding Duterte’s request for interim release.

ICC officials have reiterated their commitment to a fair and impartial investigation, emphasizing transparency throughout the process.
