ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers honored Texas Tech graduate Seth Rains on Friday night, one year after his death, during the opening game of a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

In the bottom of the fourth inning at Globe Life Field, the Rangers displayed the message: “Happy Anniversary to Seth Rains in Heaven.”

Rains, 23, died on July 27, 2025, a day after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing at the intersection of Turtle Creek Boulevard and Market Center Boulevard in Dallas. According to a GoFundMe page created by his family, Rains had attended a concert the night before and was walking back to his hotel when the crash occurred.

A 2020 graduate of Mansfield Summit High School, Rains earned his degree from Texas Tech University in 2024.

Dallas police arrested Jose Hernandez De Leon more than two weeks after the crash. He was initially charged with collision involving death, a second-degree felony.

In January 2026, Rains’ mother, Cyndi, said prosecutors filed three additional warrants against De Leon, including charges of manslaughter and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

According to charging documents, investigators used vehicle data, surveillance video and crash reconstruction to determine that De Leon was traveling at more than twice the posted 35 mph speed limit when his vehicle struck Rains in a marked crosswalk.
