INDIAN WELLS, California — Australian qualifier Talia Gibson continued her dream run at the Indian Wells Open after defeating seventh-ranked Italian Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to reach her first Women’s Tennis Association quarterfinal.

The 21-year-old Gibson delivered an aggressive performance, striking 42 winners and claiming her first victory over a top-10 opponent.

She will next face 14th-ranked Czech player Linda Noskova, who advanced after sweeping past the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala 6-2, 6-0 in just 55 minutes.

Ranked No. 112, Gibson sealed the opening set with a late break and her 18th winner of the frame. Paolini responded strongly in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead as Gibson’s errors mounted, allowing the Italian— a two-time Grand Slam finalist — to level the match.

However, Gibson regained control in the deciding set, unleashing another barrage of winners and finishing the match with a powerful forehand return on match point.

“Honestly, just completely speechless,” Gibson said after the win.

Her breakthrough run includes victories over top-20 players Ekaterina Alexandrova and Clara Tauson en route to the fourth round.

Gibson entered the 2026 season with only two main-draw wins on the WTA Tour and even had to save two match points in qualifying to reach the tournament.

“I know that with my aggressive game, often I am able to create a lot of opportunities for myself in points,” she said. “But I think I’ve surprised myself a little bit with how well I’ve been able to play for quite a few matches in a row.”
