Lawmakers urge stronger protections for Filipino freelancers

MANILA — Representative Eric Go Yap of Benguet has called on the House of Representatives to address growing concerns about the rights and welfare of freelancers in the Philippines, highlighting the need for comprehensive labor protections for professionals in the gig economy.

Yap emphasized that freelancers — including graphic designers, writers, virtual assistants, and programmers — often operate without adequate legal safeguards, leaving them vulnerable to labor violations. He noted that despite their increasing role in various industries, these workers lack the stability and protections afforded to regular employees.

“Freelancers are a vital part of our modern workforce, and it’s time our labor laws reflect that reality,” Yap stated.

The proposed legislative initiative aims to ensure fair compensation, safe working conditions, and protection from exploitation. Yap said the measure seeks to provide a legal safety net for freelancers while aligning Philippine labor standards with international practices.

Yap stressed the importance of recognizing freelancers’ economic contributions and ensuring their rights are upheld.

The House of Representatives is expected to explore various policy options, with potential measures requiring collaboration between lawmakers and stakeholders in the freelance industry.

Yap concluded that government action is crucial to developing a sustainable and equitable freelance sector, urging fellow lawmakers to prioritize the welfare of this growing segment of the workforce.
