Residents in Montrose repainted rainbow colors on a major intersection after city crews removed the neighborhood’s rainbow crosswalks on Monday in compliance with an order from Governor Greg Abbott to eliminate political markings on public roads.
The crosswalks at Westheimer and Taft had served as a symbol of support for the LGBTQ+ community. Soon after the removal, residents used chalk and paint to restore the colors as a form of protest. Supporters gathered at the site and held signs.
Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin opposed the directive and said it conflicted with the city’s policies on inclusion. Advocacy groups also expressed support for the residents’ response.
