Possible dinosaur tracks discovered along Hutto riverbank

HUTTO, Texas — A person walking to a fishing spot along a Hutto riverbank discovered two large, three-toed impressions that a Texas paleontologist said could be dinosaur tracks.

The person, who asked not to be identified and uses the Reddit username u/Expert-Ad-4358, spotted the impressions Aug. 8. The two marks sit about four feet apart and measure an estimated 18 and 25 inches long.

Thomas Adams, a vertebrate paleontologist and chief curator of paleontology at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, reviewed photographs of the impressions and said they resemble possible dinosaur footprints.

Adams cautioned that the impressions have weathered significantly, making it difficult to identify them with certainty without examining them in person.

He said the tracks appear to have three toes and could have come from either theropods, a group that includes carnivorous dinosaurs, or ornithopods, bipedal plant-eating dinosaurs.

The discovery adds to a growing record of dinosaur tracks documented across Central Texas.

“There are numerous dinosaur track sites known around the Hill Country, including a few around the Austin area,” Adams said. “New sites are discovered all of the time, especially after flooding and during droughts.”

Drought and flooding can expose tracks that normally remain covered by water or sediment. Dinosaur footprints surfaced in Travis County in July 2025 after floodwaters receded from the Sandy Creek area.

One of Texas’ best-known dinosaur track sites sits at Dinosaur Valley State Park, where fossilized footprints dating about 113 million years remain preserved in the Paluxy River bed.

Adams said anyone who finds a possible dinosaur track should document the location and take several photographs, including close-up images and wider shots showing the surrounding area. He also recommends contacting a local museum or university to report the discovery.

For now, the Hutto impressions remain a possible discovery rather than a confirmed dinosaur track site.
