A new poll shows that Americans value spending time with family more than any other aspect of the holiday season.

Most respondents said they look forward to family gatherings, shared meals, traditions, and gift exchanges, and they plan to focus on personal connections rather than politics.

The survey found that people are more likely to discuss everyday topics such as children, work, and health. Health was cited as a frequent subject, including the well-being of older relatives, children, and close friends. Respondents said holidays provide an opportunity to check on relatives’ physical and emotional needs.

Politics ranked low on the list of conversation topics. Many Americans said they avoid political discussions to maintain a calm environment and reduce the chance of arguments. Some set informal rules to steer conversations toward neutral subjects like hobbies, movies, or upcoming plans.

Family histories and stories about past holidays were popular topics. Respondents said sharing memories, including milestones and events involving grandparents, helps strengthen bonds across generations.

The poll also indicated that people who spend more time with family tend to rate their holiday experience more positively. Across age groups and regions, respondents consistently said they view the holidays as a time to relax, connect with loved ones, and focus on family and health rather than public affairs or political debate.
