MJ Phillips on Monday said she will try to bring the championship experience of the Petro Gazz Angels to the Nxled Chameleons as she joins the Premier Volleyball League club that she described as an underdog team.
Nxled on Monday officially announced the signing of Phillips along with fellow former Petro Gazz players Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo and several other former Angels.
Team officials said the multiple-player move aims to strengthen the relatively young Nxled franchise for upcoming PVL conferences.
Phillips said she welcomes the challenge of helping transform Nxled, which has yet to win a PVL title, into a more competitive contender in the league.
She said she views the Chameleons as a team that can grow by integrating the title-winning experience she and her former Petro Gazz teammates gained with the Angels.
Officials from Nxled and the PVL confirmed that the transfer followed league rules on player movement and contracts.
The club said the new signings will join the Chameleons in time for pre-season training ahead of the next PVL conference.
Coaching staff members said they plan to build systems around the strengths of Phillips, Van Sickle, Pablo and the other new recruits.
Phillips said she believes the group’s familiarity from their stint with Petro Gazz will help them adapt quickly to Nxled’s program.
She added that she expects to take on a leadership role in the locker room and on the court as the Chameleons pursue better results.
Nxled management said it will announce the final roster and additional moves before the start of the next PVL season.
League schedulers said they will release the full PVL conference calendar, including Nxled’s opening match with its revamped lineup, in the coming weeks.
