MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has yet to receive official information regarding the status of former Police Colonel Royina Garma, who is currently detained in the United States under the Magnitsky Act.

As of now, no formal communication has been provided by U.S. authorities concerning her situation.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed that the DOJ has not been contacted or briefed by the U.S. government.

Garma is reportedly detained due to allegations related to money laundering and human rights violations.

The Magnitsky Act sanctions foreign individuals implicated in significant human rights abuses and corruption, allowing the U.S. to impose visa bans and freeze assets.

Although Garma’s detention under the law indicates serious allegations, specific details remain unclear without official statements from U.S. authorities.

Remulla emphasized the need for formal communication to clarify the situation.

Reports indicate that Garma, along with her daughter, was apprehended by U.S. authorities, but there is no information regarding any legal proceedings or the duration of her detention.

Speculation has arisen about the possibility of Garma seeking political asylum in the U.S., but this has not been confirmed.

The DOJ plans to pursue inquiries to obtain official updates on Garma’s status. Remulla stated that the department is committed to gaining clarity and will explore diplomatic channels for further information.

With no official information from the U.S. at this time, the Philippines awaits further updates. The DOJ’s approach remains cautious, focusing on obtaining accurate details before making any conclusions.
