MANILA — Navotas City Representative Tobias Tiangco on Wednesday called on Philippine embassies and consulates worldwide to locate former Ako Bicol party-list representative Zaldy Co and help facilitate his return to the Philippines following the cancellation of his passport.
Tiangco issued the appeal after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that Co’s passport had been revoked. The lawmaker said he had repeatedly urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to cancel Co’s passport after authorities filed charges against the former congressman in connection with an alleged flood control corruption scheme.
Tiangco said the cancellation marked a significant step toward ensuring that Co faces the charges lodged against him, adding that he had long awaited action from concerned government agencies.
The Navotas representative reiterated his support for the Marcos administration’s efforts to hold individuals accountable in cases involving alleged large-scale corruption. He said he would continue monitoring the investigation to ensure that Co appears before the proper authorities.
Tiangco also said he expects all Philippine foreign posts to coordinate with relevant agencies to help determine Co’s location abroad. He added that he is relying on the DFA and law enforcement bodies to carry out actions stemming from the passport cancellation.
According to Tiangco, the cancellation restricts Co’s ability to travel internationally and increases the chances that he will be compelled to return to the Philippines. He said he remains in communication with officials involved in the case and will continue seeking updates as developments arise.
Tiangco said his statements were based on the President’s announcement and on his previous appeals to the DFA, noting that he wants all procedures to move forward in accordance with Philippine laws and established protocols.
