MANILA, Philippines– Officials at Malacañang accused a legal representative of misrepresenting the government’s stance on the International Criminal Court case related to the former president’s anti-drug campaign.
Nicholas Kaufman, lawyer for former President Rodrigo Duterte, distorted the Marcos administration’s position concerning Duterte’s potential interim release from the ICC. Malacañang stated that the administration remains committed to the rule of law and due process during the ICC proceedings.
The ICC has investigated alleged crimes against humanity linked to Duterte’s anti-drug operations since 2021. Despite the Philippines’ 2019 withdrawal from the ICC, the court continues to examine events that happened while the country was a member.
The Marcos administration maintained neutrality, allowing legal processes to proceed without political interference, and agreed to engage with the ICC as necessary. Officials emphasize adherence to national and international laws, highlighting the complexity of international justice in cases involving former heads of state.
The ICC investigation’s outcome could have implications for legal precedents and the Philippines’ image regarding justice and accountability.
