MANILA, Philippines — Ruth Castelo, newly appointed spokesperson for the Office of the Vice President (OVP), on Wednesday denied having any business ties with gaming operator Atong Ang since 2009, amid public scrutiny over her past association with him.
Speaking at a press briefing in Manila, Castelo responded to questions about her alleged connection to Ang, who has been accused of involvement in the disappearance of several cockfighting enthusiasts.
Castelo clarified that her professional relationship with Ang ended after his release from a detention facility in Bicutan, where he had been held in relation to a plunder case. She served as his legal counsel in 2007. Ang was later placed under a two-year probation period following the charges.
“I have had no involvement in his businesses or any personal connection since 2009,” Castelo said, refuting reports linking her to Ang’s current activities.
The denial comes after speculation circulated in media reports, raising questions about potential links between Castelo and Ang’s controversial ventures.
As of Wednesday, the Office of the Vice President has issued no further comment regarding the matter.
