To love boldly is to choose courage over fear, grace over resentment, and hope over past hurt. It is a daily decision—sometimes quiet, sometimes uncomfortable—but always powerful.

February is known as the month of love. Everywhere we turn, we are reminded to celebrate romance, connection, and affection. But love—real love—is far deeper than what we see on greeting cards or social media feeds.

Love is not soft.

Love is not passive.

Love is bold.

To love boldly is to choose courage over fear, grace over resentment, and hope over past hurt. It is a daily decision—sometimes quiet, sometimes uncomfortable—but always powerful.

Love Starts With the Hardest Relationship: Yourself

One of the boldest acts of love is learning to love yourself fully—not the polished version, not the accomplished version, but the real you.

Self-love means honoring your journey, even the chapters that were painful. It means forgiving yourself for what you didn’t know then and celebrating how far you’ve come now. It means setting boundaries without guilt and walking away from anything that diminishes your God-given worth.

When you love yourself boldly, you stop asking for permission to take up space. You stop shrinking your dreams to make others comfortable. You begin to rebuild what was broken, rise from what tried to defeat you, and rule your life with clarity and intention.

Love Is Action, Not Just Emotion

Bold love is not measured by words alone—it is proven through action.

It shows up when it would be easier to walk away.

It listens when emotions run high.

It stays when things become uncomfortable.

Love is found in the everyday choices:

Choosing patience over frustration

Speaking life instead of criticism

Showing up even when you are tired

Extending grace without expecting anything in return

These moments may seem small, but they shape relationships, restore trust, and build lasting impact.

Loving When It’s Hard Is the True Test

Let’s be honest—loving is not always easy. There are moments when trust has been broken, expectations have fallen short, and disappointment lingers.

But bold love does not quit at the first sign of difficulty.

It remains rooted in faith.

It chooses understanding over judgment.

It believes growth is possible—even after failure.

Loving boldly does not mean tolerating disrespect or accepting less than you deserve. It means loving with wisdom, strength, and discernment—knowing when to hold on and when to let go.

Love Is Leadership

Love is leadership.

When you lead with love, you inspire instead of intimidate. You empower instead of control. You create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Whether in family, friendship, business, healthcare, or community leadership—love is your greatest influence. People may forget what you said or what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

A Bold Invitation This February

This month, don’t just celebrate love—live it boldly.

Love yourself enough to heal.

Love others enough to forgive.

Love deeply enough to grow.

Love courageously enough to lead.

Because love—when chosen daily and lived intentionally—has the power to restore hope, strengthen communities, and rewrite stories.

Be bold in love.

Let faith guide your heart.

And never be afraid to love out loud.

As the calendar flips to January 2026, something electric hangs in the air—not just another new year, but a collective invitation to stop playing small.

As the calendar flips to January 2026, something electric hangs in the air—not just another new year, but a collective invitation to stop playing small.

For too long, many of us have rehearsed the safe version of ourselves: the polite “yes but maybe later,” the carefully curated opinion, the dream kept in a private notes app. Boldness isn’t about becoming reckless or loud. It’s about deciding that your voice, your desires, and your presence deserve space—full, unedited space.

Why 2026? Because the world has spent recent years teaching us how quickly everything can change. Stability is an illusion we can no longer afford to worship. The people who thrive now aren’t the ones waiting for permission; they’re the ones moving before the path is fully lit.

Boldness Is a Daily Decision, Not a Personality Type

You don’t need to be naturally outgoing to live boldly. You simply need to choose discomfort over regret more often than you choose comfort over growth.

Here are powerful, practical ways to build that muscle in 2026:

Speak before you’re 100% ready
That meeting comment, that DM to someone you admire, that boundary you’ve been meaning to set—say it this quarter, not “someday.” Imperfect expression beats perfect silence every time.

Audit your life for quiet concessions
Where are you dimming yourself to keep the peace? The extra workload you accept, the opinion you swallow, the goal you’ve downsized—list them. Then choose one to stop tolerating this month.

Ask for the bigger version
Salary negotiation. Project scope. Date expectations. Partnership terms. The world rarely gives you the upgraded version unless you explicitly request it. Practice asking for 20–30% more than feels comfortable.

Collect small proofs of courage
Send the vulnerable text. Post the unfiltered thought. Walk into the room like you belong (because you do). Each micro-act rewires your nervous system to register “I survived → I can do harder things.”

Curate a bolder environment
Surround yourself with people who are already living audaciously. Unfollow accounts that normalize shrinking. Follow creators who make boldness look normal, even joyful. 0 “LARGE”

(Imagine the chains—literal or emotional—that once held you back. 2026 is the year you shatter them for good.)

Iconic Words to Anchor Your Year

Carry these quotes like pocket talismans:

“Man cannot discover new oceans until he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” — André Gide

“Leap and the net will appear.” — John Burroughs (often attributed)

“You must be bold, brave, and courageous and find a way… to get in the way.” — Representative John Lewis

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill

“Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity.” — Unknown

Print one. Make it your phone lock screen. Whisper it before big moments. 3 “LARGE”

(Bold typography to remind you daily: the energy of 2026 is decisive, unafraid, and entirely yours to shape.)

Your 2026 Boldness Manifesto

Finish this sentence ten different ways and pick the one that makes your chest tighten (in a good way):

In 2026, I will finally…

ask for the raise/raise my rates without apology

launch before it’s perfect

end the relationship/ dynamic that drains me

say “no” without explaining myself

take up space in rooms that used to intimidate me

pitch the dream collaboration

wear/ say/ do the thing I’ve always wanted but feared judgment about

invest in myself (therapy, coaching, course, travel, rest) without guilt

Write your sentence somewhere permanent. Speak it aloud. Let it scare you a little. That’s how you know it’s the right size.

The truth is simple:
The version of you that 2025-you is afraid of becoming is probably the version 2030-you will thank endlessly.

So go ahead—be bolder in 2026.
Not because the world is ready for it.
But because you are done waiting for the world to catch up.

Here’s to claiming your full volume.
The future is listening. Make sure it hears you.

Some journeys are etched with glamour; others are written with grit. For Mary An Rivera, it’s both. A proud Filipina with a Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Mary An made a bold leap of faith in 2013 when she left the Philippines to start a new life in the United States. What began as a professional role in the oil industry became a transformative season of growth, resilience, and self-discovery.

But the title Mary An wears most proudly today isn’t tied to a corporate office—it’s the sacred role of mother. After years of trying and enduring the emotional roller coaster of IVF, she was blessed with twin daughters, the miracle she once only dreamed of. Her motherhood journey, while deeply personal, has become her most powerful platform.

“Infertility is a silent battle many women face. I want them to know they are not alone, that hope is real, and that miracles still happen.”

With courage born from her own struggle, Mary An has become an advocate for Infertility Awareness, using her voice to uplift women who may feel unseen or unheard. Her message is simple but bold: You are not broken. You are brave.

Now, representing Texas in the prestigious Ginang Filipinas America National Pageant 2025, Mary An is redefining what pageantry truly means. For her, it’s not just about beauty and poise—it’s about purpose, motherhood, and the strength to rise after the storm.

This year’s national pageant will take place in Tacoma, Washington, featuring two powerful evenings that showcase the grace, talent, and resilience of empowered Filipina women:

September 3: Pre-Pageant Talent Night – open to the public (ticketed admission)

September 6: Grand Coronation Night

In partnership with Missosology, the pageant is expected to reach more than 15 million viewers worldwide, offering Mary An a global platform to share her message of hope and healing.

Her presence in this national competition is a celebration of every woman who has quietly fought battles, carried invisible scars, and still shows up with hope in her eyes. Mary An reminds us that the real crown lies in how we rise, love, and lead with intention.

To the women waiting on a miracle, fighting silent battles, or stepping into a new beginning—Mary An’s story is your reminder: You are seen. You are strong. And your boldest days are still ahead.

As Consul Gilbert Segarra wraps up his tour of duty at the Philippine Consulate General in Houston (PCG Houston), the Filipino American community is grateful for the invaluable contributions he has made during his time in office. In over six years at PCG Houston, his commitment to addressing the needs of the Filipino-American community has made a significant impression. From fostering cultural connections to advocating for the rights and welfare of Filipinos, Consul Gilbert’s efforts have strengthened the bonds within the community. As he prepares to move on to new endeavors, we take this opportunity to acknowledge and express our heartfelt gratitude to him for his support and commitment to enhancing the lives of Filipinos in Houston and beyond. We invited him in ‘Be Bold. Why Not?’, hosted by MJ Concepcion, as we look back on his achievements and the legacy he leaves behind in our vibrant community.

Through this inspiring conversation, we delve into the stories and insights of remarkable leaders who embody the ethos of ‘Lead with Passion,’ focusing on how true passion and boldness can lead to exceptional leadership. In this episode, our special guest is Consul Gilbert, a trailblazer in his field whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. We explore his experiences, values, and the impact of his passionate leadership.

Early Life and Background

In our conversation, Consul Gilbert provides a glimpse into his early life and background. Raised in the picturesque province of Quezon, Philippines, Consul Gilbert’s story begins in a close-knit family with deep-rooted values. He shares how his upbringing and familial environment played a pivotal role in shaping his character and aspirations.

Consul Gilbert remembers on the mornings filled with laughter and the evenings spent discussing dreams and ambitions with his family. “My parents instilled in me the importance of integrity and hard work,” he says. “They were both educators, so the value of learning was never lost on me.” This nurturing environment fostered not just a love for knowledge but also a sense of responsibility toward others.

The Influence of Education and Family

Education and family were cornerstones in Consul Gilbert’s life. With parents who were both teachers, the emphasis on learning and hard work was a given. Consul Gilbert discusses how his parents’ dedication to education and their embodiment of service and integrity profoundly influenced him, leaving a lasting impact that shaped the foundation for his ambitious endeavors. Consul Gilbert discusses how his parents’ dedication to education and their embodiment of service and integrity profoundly influenced him, leaving a lasting impact that shaped the foundation for his ambitious endeavors.

“My mother, who is now 86 years old, often reminded me that education is a tool for empowerment,” he explains. “My father, who is now 91 years old, said it’s not just about acquiring knowledge but about using it to uplift those around you.” This early lesson shaped his perspective on leadership, emphasizing that true leaders serve their communities.

From Seminary Dreams to Public Service

Consul Gilbert’s journey was not a straightforward one. Initially aspiring to join the seminary, he spent six years in religious training, which instilled in him discipline and a servant-leadership mentality. Ultimately, he shifted his path towards public service. He explored his time in the seminary and the pivotal decision to transition into a career in government service.

“I believed that joining the seminary would allow me to serve people in a profound way,” he recalls. “However, over time, I realized that my passion for serving could also be fulfilled through public service.” This realization initiated a new chapter in his life, one where he could combine his faith with actionable change in society.

The Rigorous Path to Foreign Service

The transition into the Philippine foreign service was no small feat. Consul Gilbert describes the competitive nature of the Foreign Service Officers Examination and the intense training that followed. His determination and commitment to his fundamental goal of serving the public stand out, offering a glimpse into the challenging path of becoming a diplomat.

“The exam was daunting,” he admits, “but I knew that if I wanted to make a difference on a global scale, I had to push myself.” Consul Gilbert emphasizes that this period taught him invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of preparation. His journey through training was filled with challenges that tested both his intellect and emotional strength.

Life as a Diplomat: Challenges and Triumphs

Consul Gilbert’s career as a diplomat has taken him across three continents and through numerous challenging situations. From the complexities of consular work in the Middle East and Eastern Europe to fostering diplomatic relations in Houston, this part of his life chronicles the highs and lows of his diplomatic endeavors. His reflections on the most challenging aspects of his work underscore the resilience and adaptability required in his profession.

“Every assignment brought its own set of challenges,” he states. “In the Middle East, I faced situations that tested my resolve. Yet, it was also there that I witnessed the power of diplomacy in action.” Consul Gilbert experiences has contributed to his understanding of the global issues and the role of empathy in resolving conflicts.

Servant Leadership and Core Values

Consul Gilbert’s commitment to servant leadership emphasizes values such as integrity, empathy, humility, and adaptability.. “Servant leadership is about prioritizing the needs of others,” he explains passionately. “It’s about listening more than you speak and ensuring that everyone feels valued.” These principles guide Consul Gilbert’s interactions with colleagues and the communities he serves, reinforcing his belief that effective leaders elevate others.

Mentors and Influences that Shaped Consul Gilbert’s Journey

When asked about the most memorable persons and mentors he admires, Consul Gilbert shared his reflections on three influential figures. First, he spoke about Father Emilio Pablo, saying, “Spanish Priest Emilio Pablo, who was a naturalized Filipino citizen and spent his whole life in the Philippines serving others. His commitment to service and humility was really inspiring, and his dedication to values of service and simplicity left a lasting mark on me.”

Consul Gilbert then discussed the second influential person in his life, Ambassador Bernardita Leonido Catalla (February 18, 1958 – April 2, 2020), who was the Passport Director during his time as a contractual employee. He stated, “Ambassador Bernie Catalla is incredibly innovative and genuinely believes in the potential of things. Her ability to nurture talent was truly admirable. She encouraged me to pursue my goal of becoming a diplomat after recognizing that my work consistently exceeded expectations. Unfortunately, she was one of the first to pass away during the early stages of the COVID pandemic in the Philippines, which left all DFA personnel who knew her personally deeply saddened.”

Lastly, he highlighted the third mentor in his life, saying, “The third key mentor is Ambassador Julio Cardenas, leader of the DFA Choral, who imparted two lessons. First, focus on building lasting relationships rather than competing in a cutthroat environment. Second, nobody is indispensable in this job; meaning, impart your knowledge, help a colleague develop and mature, and then this will become a partnership.

Most Fulfilling Assignment

When Consul Gilbert was asked about the most fulfilling assignment in his career, he expressed that his time in the Middle East stands out as the most rewarding. He explained, “My assignment in the Middle East is the most fulfilling because I was able to assist a significant number of Filipinos who truly needed various forms of support. This region has seen some of the most challenging experiences for our fellow countrymen, and being there to provide help during such difficult times was profoundly meaningful to me.” He emphasized the importance of his role in addressing the unique challenges faced by Filipinos living and working in that area, noting that any mistake could affect human lives.

Impact on the Community

One of the most rewarding aspects of Consul Gilbert’s job is the direct impact on individuals and communities. He talks about the joy and fulfillment that comes from assisting fellow Filipinos and how his role enables him to make a significant difference. Consul Gilbert also mentioned the power of small acts of kindness and community service, illustrating how passion-driven leadership can effect positive change.

“I often remind myself that my role is not just about policy but about people,” he asserts. “Whether it’s helping someone navigate bureaucracy or connecting them with resources, every interaction matters.” This perspective fosters a deep sense of connection between Consul Gilbert and those he serves, demonstrating how leadership rooted in passion can transform lives.

Home Sweet Home

When asked about his time in Houston and whether his tour of duty at the PCG in Houston would be extended for another full term, he explained that “a diplomat’s time in their foreign assignment should not exceed six years, although extensions for a short period are possible.” Regarding his desire to go home, Consul Gilbert remarked that he feels he is living on “borrowed time.” He looks forward to returning home for a two-year break and preparing for another deployment in a different country after his time at the Department of Foreign Affairs. Each assignment offers Consul Gilbert fresh perspectives on both life and the people in the host country.

Wrap-up

Through Consul Gilbert’s experiences, we are inspired that leading with passion is not only about achieving personal success but also about creating a positive impact on those around us. His story is an evidence to the power of leading with passion and boldness, and an inspiration that we all have the potential to make a difference in the world. Whether you are a seasoned leader or just starting out on your own journey, Consul Gilbert’s insights and experiences offer valuable lessons and takeaways that can help you lead with greater purpose, passion, and impact. By embracing the ethos of “Lead with Passion” and leading with integrity, empathy, and resilience, we can all make a positive difference in the world and create a lasting legacy that inspires and empowers others.

In the world of gymnastics, where every leap, twist, and somersault is a battle against gravity, one name has risen to the top, defying the odds and capturing the hearts of millions: Carlos Edriel Yulo. This young Filipino gymnast has not only etched his name in the annals of sports history but has also become a symbol of perseverance, courage, and unyielding determination.

A Humble Beginning

Carlos Yulo’s journey began in the bustling streets of Malate, Manila. Born on February 16, 2000, in a modest family, Yulo’s early life was far from the glamorous world of international sports. His love for gymnastics was ignited at a young age when he would imitate the flips and stunts he saw on television. Recognizing his potential, his grandfather took him to the gymnastics club at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. It was here that the seed of a champion was planted.

Despite the limited resources and training facilities in the Philippines, Yulo’s talent shone through. His passion for gymnastics was matched by an unparalleled work ethic, and soon, he was catching the attention of national coaches. At just 13 years old, he was selected to join the national team, a decision that would change his life forever.

The Leap of Faith

Paris 2024 Olympics – Artistic Gymnastics – Men’s Vault Final – Bercy Arena, Paris, France – August 04, 2024.
In 2016, Yulo made a bold decision that would shape his future. He left his family and the familiar comforts of home to train in Japan, under the guidance of renowned coach Munehiro Kugimiya. This move was a leap of faith, a young boy in a foreign land, facing the challenges of language barriers and homesickness. But Yulo was determined. He knew that to achieve greatness, he had to step out of his comfort zone and embrace the unknown.

Training in Japan was rigorous. The discipline and precision demanded in gymnastics were instilled in him through grueling hours of practice. Yet, Yulo never wavered. He knew that every drop of sweat, every muscle ache, and every moment of doubt was a step closer to his dream.

The World Takes Notice

Philippines’ Carlos Edriel Yulo is congratulated by Britain’s Harry Hepworth after winning the artistic gymnastics men’s vault final during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Bercy Arena in Paris, on August 4, 2024.
Carlos Yulo’s hard work paid off spectacularly. In 2019, at just 19 years old, he made history by becoming the first Filipino and Southeast Asian gymnast to win a gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. His flawless routine on the floor exercise stunned the judges and the world, earning him a score of 15.300.

This victory was not just a personal triumph for Yulo; it was a moment of pride for the entire Philippines. It was proof that with hard work, dedication, and a bold spirit, even a boy from humble beginnings could rise to the pinnacle of global sports.

Beyond the Medals

Philippines’ Carlos Edriel Yulo (gold) poses during the podium ceremony for the artistic gymnastics men’s vault event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Bercy Arena in Paris, on August 4, 2024.
While his gold medal was a crowning achievement, Carlos Yulo’s story is about more than just the accolades. It is about the courage to dream big, the resilience to overcome obstacles, and the boldness to chase those dreams no matter the cost.

Yulo’s journey is a testament to the power of believing in oneself. He has inspired countless young Filipinos to pursue their passions, no matter how impossible they may seem. In a country where resources for sports are often limited, Yulo’s success is a beacon of hope, showing that greatness can emerge from the most unexpected places.

The Road Ahead

Carlos Yulo’s journey is far from over. As he continues to compete on the world stage, his eyes are set on new goals, including the Olympic Games. With each competition, he carries the hopes and dreams of his nation, a reminder that no dream is too big for those who dare to be bold.

His story is a powerful reminder that success is not just about talent; it’s about the courage to take risks, the tenacity to overcome failures, and the determination to keep moving forward, no matter the odds. Carlos Yulo embodies the spirit of boldness, showing the world that with heart, hard work, and an unwavering belief in oneself, anything is possible.

In the years to come, Carlos Yulo will undoubtedly continue to inspire, not just as a gymnast, but as a symbol of what it means to be truly bold in the pursuit of one’s dreams.

After nearly 12 years at Baylor St. Luke’s Hospital, where I navigated through diverse roles in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, and Pain Management, I decided it was time to take a bold step in my professional journey. My tenure at Baylor St. Luke’s was marked by growth, learning, and profound experiences. Yet, an opportunity arose that I could not ignore—the chance to join the number one cancer center in the world, MD Anderson Cancer Center, as an Advanced Practice Provider in the Supportive Care Department.

This decision was not made lightly. Leaving a place that had been my professional home for over a decade was daunting. Baylor St. Luke’s was more than just a workplace; it was where I honed my skills, formed lasting relationships, and made a significant impact on my patients’ lives. The environment was familiar and comfortable, and the thought of stepping into a new and unfamiliar territory was intimidating.

However, my commitment to making a difference in patients’ lives fueled my decision to embrace this change. At Baylor St. Luke’s, I had the privilege of working in various departments, each offering unique challenges and learning experiences. My journey through Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine taught me the intricacies of diagnosing and managing chronic conditions. In Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, I witnessed the resilience of patients as they recovered from injuries and surgeries. Pain Management opened my eyes to the complexities of chronic pain and the importance of a compassionate approach.

Each role prepared me for the next, culminating in a comprehensive skill set and a deep understanding of patient care. But the allure of MD Anderson Cancer Center was undeniable. Known globally for its cutting-edge research, innovative treatments, and unparalleled patient care, MD Anderson represented the pinnacle of excellence in oncology. The opportunity to contribute to such an esteemed institution, particularly in the Supportive Care Department, was a dream come true.

The Supportive Care Department at MD Anderson plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients. This department focuses on alleviating symptoms, managing pain, and providing emotional and psychological support. As an Advanced Practice Provider, I have the privilege of being on the front lines, offering compassionate care to patients during one of the most challenging times in their lives. This role is not just a job; it is a calling to provide holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.

Making this transition required a bold leap of faith. It meant stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing new challenges, and committing to continuous learning. The advanced therapies, the multidisciplinary team approach, and the innovative research at MD Anderson demand a high level of expertise and dedication. I was ready to meet these demands, fueled by the desire to make a meaningful impact in the field of oncology.

Joining MD Anderson has been a transformative experience. The culture of excellence, the dedication to patient-centered care, and the relentless pursuit of innovation inspire me every day. Working alongside some of the brightest minds in oncology, I am continually learning and growing. The collaborative environment fosters a sense of community and shared purpose, reinforcing my commitment to providing the best possible care to our patients.

In reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the importance of being bold in our professional lives. Change can be intimidating, but it is through change that we grow and reach new heights. My transition from Baylor St. Luke’s to MD Anderson is a testament to the power of embracing new opportunities and stepping into the unknown with courage and conviction.

To my colleagues and friends at Baylor St. Luke’s, thank you for the incredible journey and the unwavering support. To my new family at MD Anderson, I am honored to be part of this extraordinary team. And to anyone contemplating a bold move in their career, I encourage you to take that leap. It is through boldness that we discover our true potential and make a lasting impact on the world.
