Former President Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic party’s nominee for president, marking a pivotal moment in the 2024 election cycle. The endorsement, which came after several days of anticipation, was delivered in a heartfelt video call between Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Harris herself.

In the video released on Friday, the Obamas expressed their unwavering support for Harris, emphasizing the historic nature of her candidacy. “I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” Michelle Obama remarked during the call.

Barack Obama, who made history himself as the first person of color elected as U.S. president, underscored the significance of Harris potentially becoming the first woman to hold the office. “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Obama affirmed.

Harris, who is of Black and Asian Indian descent, secured the Democratic National Committee delegates swiftly after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, solidifying her position as the presumptive nominee. The Obamas’ endorsement adds considerable weight to Harris’ campaign, rallying support from across the Democratic establishment.

Obama had withheld his endorsement until now as the party finalized its nomination process. In his statement, he commended Biden for his decision to step aside and reiterated Biden’s lifelong dedication to serving the American people.

As the 2024 election season progresses, Harris’s campaign gains momentum with the backing of two influential figures in the Democratic party. The endorsement not only highlights Harris’s historic candidacy but also sets the stage for a competitive and closely watched presidential race.
