MANILA, Philippines– President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday released a statement commemorating Ninoy Aquino Day, marking the 42nd anniversary of Aquino’s assassination on August 21, 1983.

Marcos emphasized the importance of historical reflection, stating that the passage of time has offered the nation greater clarity on pivotal events such as Aquino’s death. He noted that understanding such moments helps shape governance and the country’s future.

While the President did not directly comment on Aquino’s character, he acknowledged the broader impact of the assassination, which played a key role in triggering the People Power Revolution that ended the Marcos regime in 1986.

This year’s observance of Ninoy Aquino Day remains unchanged as a national holiday. Marcos’ statement represents a rare instance of a sitting president from the Marcos family publicly addressing the legacy of a prominent political rival.

The commemoration continues to be a point of national reflection on democratic ideals and the country’s political history.
