MANILA, Philippines– Elakim Patidongan, the brother of whistleblower Julie Patidongan, has come forward as a potential witness in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of cockfighting enthusiasts, or sabungeros.
Currently in police custody, Elakim Patidongan claims to have information regarding the fate of Melbert John Santos, one of the individuals abducted in January 2022. He admitted to withdrawing money from Santos’ ATM account at the instruction of an unnamed police officer.
The case involves multiple complaints filed by relatives of the missing individuals, including charges of multiple murder and serious illegal detention against gaming businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang and several others.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla acknowledged the development, stating that Patidongan’s testimony could play a significant role in advancing the investigation. Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.
The Philippine government has emphasized its commitment to resolving the case through credible witness accounts and thorough investigation. Efforts are also being made to ensure the safety and cooperation of potential witnesses.
Investigators hope that new testimony from Patidongan will provide further insight into the ongoing investigation, which aims to deliver justice and closure to the families of the missing sabungeros.
