MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government expressed confidence that the commitments established between the United States and the Philippines during President Joe Biden’s term will persist with the transition to the administration led by Donald Trump. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin communicated this assurance, highlighting the enduring relationship and shared goals of both nations.

The bond between the United States and the Philippines has been shaped by a long history, with both countries working together in several areas. These partnerships include collaborations in defense, trade, education, and disaster response. Both countries have shown commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. This commitment is evident in various defense agreements and joint military exercises designed to enhance cooperation and security.

The newly announced Trump administration is expected to uphold these agreements, ensuring that the mutual interests of both nations are met. The focus remains on promoting peace, prosperity, and stability. The defense agreements, including the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), play a crucial role in this relationship. These agreements allow for military collaboration and logistical support and are seen as essential to the security dynamics in the region.

Officials in Manila have affirmed the importance of these agreements and their positive impact on regional security. While the transition to a new administration in the U.S. often raises questions about policy directions, Malacañang Palace remains optimistic about continued cooperation. Executive Secretary Bersamin emphasized the need for collaboration and mutual respect, stressing that both countries have much to gain from maintaining their close ties.

Economic collaboration is another area where the two nations have seen significant progress. Trade agreements have facilitated the exchange of goods and services, benefiting both economies. The Philippines has been a key partner in the region for the U.S., with trade relations contributing to economic growth and development.

The Trump administration’s approach to trade with Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, will be closely monitored. The focus will be on maintaining existing agreements while exploring new opportunities for enhancing economic ties. There is anticipation that the Trump administration will continue to support measures that encourage trade growth and regional cooperation.

In education, the U.S. and the Philippines have built a strong foundation through exchange programs and educational partnerships. These initiatives have fostered cultural understanding and provided opportunities for students and professionals from both countries. The programs are likely to continue, reflecting the mutual interest in educational advancement and cultural exchange.

The U.S. has also been a significant partner in assisting the Philippines with disaster response and management. Providing aid and support during natural disasters has strengthened relations and showcased the commitment to helping each other during crises.
