New Educational Institutions to Rise as Katy ISD Expands in West Houston’s Growing Grange Community

In a strategic move to accommodate the rapidly growing population in west Houston, Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) has procured 51 acres of land within the Grange community for the construction of two new schools. With the acquisition finalized recently, the district plans to build both an elementary school and a junior high on Schilpf Road in this fast-developing area.

The Grange community, an extensive 1,130-acre master-planned project by Johnson Development, was first unveiled in March 2024. This ambitious development is supported by a venture associated with Hilcorp Energy’s CEO, billionaire Jeffrey Hildebrand. The initial phase of Grange includes 301 home sites, setting a vibrant backdrop for the new schools.

Katy ISD’s land purchase includes a 16-acre plot for the elementary school and a 35-acre parcel for the junior high. Construction of the junior high is anticipated to commence in late 2025 or early 2026, with plans to open its doors by 2028. This school is designed to house 1,400 students, addressing the burgeoning demand in the area. The timeline for the elementary school is not yet established, as its construction is contingent upon a future district bond, according to Ted Vierling, Katy ISD Chief Operations Officer.

Katy ISD’s expansion into the Grange community underscores the district’s proactive approach to managing population growth and ensuring access to quality education. The district, known for its exemplary educational standards, continues to attract families seeking academic excellence for their children.

Jacob W. Rice, Vice President and General Manager of Grange, expressed optimism about the schools’ impact on the community. “A Katy address and Katy schools are a big draw for home buyers,” he remarked. “Welcoming new Katy ISD schools into our community will undoubtedly enhance the appeal of Grange, further elevating its reputation as a prime destination for families.”

Beyond education, the Grange development is committed to fostering community growth through a scholarship program. Beginning January 1, the program invites high school seniors to apply for two scholarships, each valued at $5,000, to support their enrollment in two-to-five-year institutions. Applications will be accepted until March 1. Rice emphasized that this initiative represents more than an investment; it is a pledge to bolster the community’s future prosperity.

The Grange community, with its strategic location and comprehensive development plans, is poised to become a major hub for families in the Houston area. Katy ISD’s involvement in this community is a testament to its dedication to expanding educational opportunities while supporting the holistic growth of the area.

As the district looks to the future, these new schools are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of west Houston, ensuring that the growing population has access to high-quality learning environments. Katy ISD remains committed to its mission of delivering exceptional education and fostering community engagement through strategic initiatives and thoughtful planning.
