City officials in New Braunfels, Texas, are warning residents and business owners about a fraudulent email scheme impersonating the city’s planning and services department.

The emails, which appear to come from official city accounts, reportedly attempt to obtain sensitive information or prompt recipients to make financial transactions under the pretense of city-related business.

Officials urge anyone receiving such messages to contact the city’s planning and services department directly to verify their authenticity.

The city emphasized that it never requests confidential information or payments via email and advised residents to exercise caution with unsolicited messages.

Local law enforcement and the New Braunfels Police Department are investigating the scam, working with cybersecurity experts to identify its source and prevent further incidents. The city’s Information Technology department is also involved, implementing enhanced digital security measures to safeguard municipal communications.

Authorities are advising residents and businesses to follow best cybersecurity practices, including using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and training employees to recognize phishing attempts.

To verify suspicious communications, residents are encouraged to use the official contact numbers listed on the City of New Braunfels’ website.

City officials said no financial losses have been reported so far but urged continued vigilance. The city also plans to hold public information sessions to help community members recognize and respond to fraudulent emails.

Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining the integrity and security of city communications and called for community cooperation in reporting and preventing cyber scams.
