MANILA, Philippines — Lawyer and businessman Hilario Paredes has been appointed by President Marcos as the new chair of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). Paredes, aged 52, takes over from retired Police Gen. Thompson Lantion, who was named to the position just a month earlier.

The BCDA is responsible for the conversion of former military bases into commercial and residential areas. The authority plays a significant role in various infrastructure and development projects in the country.

Paredes brings a combination of legal and business expertise to the role. His background may aid in navigating the complexities of development projects and the management of assets under the BCDA’s care. Details of his previous experience were not outlined in the announcement.

Despite the recent changes in leadership, the BCDA is currently refining plans for the re-development of Market! Market!, one of its key projects. The authority is involved in several initiatives aimed at revitalizing areas that were once military installations, transforming them into spaces for economic growth and urban development.

This appointment is part of President Marcos’s broader strategy to fill key positions within the government with individuals he believes will drive progress and efficiency. The shift in leadership comes as the government seeks to enhance development programs and respond to the changing needs of the population.

The new chair is expected to address ongoing and future projects. Paredes will need to engage with various stakeholders, including local governments and private sectors, to achieve the BCDA’s objectives. His leadership is anticipated to bring a renewed focus on sustainable development and effective management of resources.
