MANILA, Philippines — Philippine men’s national football team goalkeeper Neil Etheridge announced his retirement from international duty on Monday, ending a national team career that began in 2008.

Etheridge announced his decision in a social media post, marking the end of a stint that started when he debuted as an 18-year-old during the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers in Iloilo City.

“Thank you to everyone I have come across and I wish nothing but success for the next generation of Filipino footballers across the world,” Etheridge said. “All I wanted from the beginning was to make a difference and I hope that I was able to achieve that with my service to the country and national team.”

Etheridge became a key figure in Philippine football during the team’s rise in Southeast Asian competition. He played in the squad that defeated Vietnam in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup group stage, a match widely referred to as “The Miracle in Hanoi.”

He later helped the national team, then known as the Azkals, reach the semifinals of the regional tournament and maintain consistent appearances in the competition.

Etheridge also contributed to the Philippines’ qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, the country’s first appearance in the continental tournament.

He made 82 appearances for the national team and last played internationally in 2024 while also playing club football for Buriram United in Thailand.

In his retirement message, Etheridge cited his experiences with teammates and his long international career.

“Time away and things that I had to experience along the way with teammates that no one other than my teammates would understand,” he said. “I don’t regret any of my decisions.”

Etheridge’s national team retirement comes days after he helped Buriram United win the ASEAN Club Championship.

He also holds the distinction of being the first Filipino player to appear in the English Premier League after Cardiff City competed in the 2018–2019 season following promotion.
