US weather alert: Ice, snow, and cold to hit over half the country

Forecasters warn that a large winter storm will sweep across the United States this weekend into early next week, affecting more than half the country with snow, sleet, ice, and dangerously low temperatures.

The storm, forming over the western U.S., will track eastward in stages. Heavy snow is expected in the Plains, Midwest, and interior Northeast, with some areas receiving several inches to over a foot. Strong winds may reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions. South and east of the snow band, a mix of ice and freezing rain could bring downed trees, power lines, and scattered outages.

An arctic air mass following the storm will drive temperatures well below normal, with wind chills creating risks of frostbite and hypothermia. Local governments are opening warming centers, and transportation agencies are pre-treating roads. Airlines warn of delays and cancellations, while residents are urged to avoid nonessential travel, prepare emergency kits, and monitor official alerts.
