DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks face a franchise crossroads following a reshaped roster and the addition of top pick Cooper Flagg, according to recent NBA analysis and reporting.
The team entered the past season aiming to build a veteran core around Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, but failed to reach the playoffs after trading Luka Dončić and dealing with injuries during the 2025 season. The Mavericks later secured the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft Lottery, selecting Flagg.
Roster changes have since altered Dallas’ long-term outlook. Davis was traded ahead of the deadline, creating additional salary cap flexibility. Irving remains on the roster.
NBA analyst Jeremy Woo said in a mock draft report that Dallas could select Mikel Brown Jr. with the eighth overall pick but noted the franchise may need to avoid maintaining two competing timelines between veterans and younger players. Woo said that Irving’s future could become a focal point if the Mavericks choose to prioritize rebuilding.
The situation has prompted comparisons to teams that attempted to compete while developing younger talent at the same time. Analysts have noted that Dallas could instead move veteran players, including Irving, Daniel Gafford, Naji Marshall, and P.J. Washington, to accumulate draft assets and build around Flagg.
The Mavericks have already acquired multiple future draft picks from previous trades, including the deal involving Davis, but do not control their own first-round pick until 2031.
Team officials have not announced any decisions regarding roster direction or potential trades.
