Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died in an apparent suicide following a police pursuit and crash in Frisco, Texas, on Thursday, Nov. 6, according to authorities. He was 24 years old.
The Frisco Police Department reported that officers found Kneeland with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he fled on foot from a vehicle that had crashed during the chase.
Kneeland, in his second season with the Cowboys, had just celebrated a career milestone earlier in the week, scoring his first NFL touchdown in Monday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
In a statement, the Dallas Cowboys organization said they were deeply saddened by his death and extended condolences to Kneeland’s girlfriend, family, and loved ones.
A standout athlete, Kneeland was a second-round draft pick in 2024 out of Western Michigan University, where he earned recognition for his defensive skills and leadership. His promising performance had made him one of the young players to watch on the Cowboys’ roster.
Kneeland’s death marks the second time in recent years that a Cowboys player has died during the season, casting a shadow over the team and its fans as they mourn the loss of another young talent.
