MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a thorough investigation into the disappearance of more than 100 cockfighting enthusiasts, or sabungeros, across multiple provinces, Malacañang announced Wednesday.

The directive follows testimony from a witness identified as “Alyas Totoy,” who implicated businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, several police officers, and a showbiz personality in the suspected abductions.

The victims reportedly vanished between April 2021 and January 2022 from locations in Laguna, Batangas, Manila, and Bulacan.

“Alyas Totoy” alleged that the remains of some victims were dumped in Taal Lake in Batangas. Officials have not confirmed the claim but are evaluating all leads.

Claire Castro, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office, said President Marcos instructed law enforcement agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) reported that four new witnesses have emerged and may provide key information in the case. Authorities are assessing whether any of them can serve as state witnesses.

According to the DOJ, some government and police officials may be connected to the billion-peso cockfighting industry and linked to the abductions and suspected killings. The department warned that these individuals could possess the influence to affect judicial proceedings, including at the Supreme Court level.

Despite those concerns, Undersecretary Castro said the government remains confident in the justice system’s independence. “The law will be enforced fully and fairly,” she said.

The Palace Press Office stated that investigators will prioritize the collection of evidence such as photographs and videos to support legal actions.

The government has pledged to pursue justice for the victims and their families through all available legal means.
