MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday marked Labor Day by honoring Filipino workers as the “Republic’s backbone,” pledging continued government efforts to improve job quality and economic opportunity.

In his message, Marcos praised workers across sectors, saying their daily efforts sustain families and drive national development. He described Filipino laborers as central to the country’s progress and resilience.

“Today, we honor every member of our workforce whose hands carry the weight of our shared future—whether at sunrise, beneath the noonday heat, or during the long hours when the nation sleeps,” he said.

Marcos said that despite technological changes and ongoing economic challenges, the country continues to rely on the dedication of workers to keep industries and services running.

“Through your grit and sacrifice, families find stability, and the country finds strength. You are, and will always be, the backbone of our Republic,” he added.

The President also said his administration is committed to expanding employment opportunities, strengthening labor protections, and improving access to livelihoods.

“As we face changing economic pressures, rest assured that this administration stands firm in defending the dignity of every Filipino by creating more and better jobs, strengthening worker protection, and broadening pathways for all to succeed,” he said.

According to February 2026 labor data, 49.43 million Filipinos were employed. The labor force stood at 52.09 million, with 2.66 million unemployed. Among those employed, 5.84 million—or 11.8 percent—reported wanting additional working hours.
