Manila, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has approved the reallocation of ₱36 billion in government funds, originally intended for flood control projects, to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The funds, previously earmarked for infrastructure related to flood management, will now support a range of DSWD programs aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable communities.
“This adjustment reflects our need to respond swiftly to the pressing concerns of our people,” President Marcos Jr. said in a statement. “Social welfare must be prioritized, especially in times of rising socioeconomic challenges.”
Government officials confirmed that the reallocation process involves coordination between the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), DSWD, and agencies responsible for flood control.
Malacañang assured that essential flood mitigation programs will continue and that the government is exploring alternative funding sources to address any potential gaps. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be put in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of the reallocated funds.
The DSWD is now preparing to roll out enhanced programs using the new funding. These are expected to include cash assistance, livelihood support, and other initiatives targeted at low-income households.
